Talking to APP here on Saturday, founder President Pak-US Business Council and veteran trade leader Iftikhar Ali Malik said the US Chamber of Commerce (USCC0 had realised the gravity of worst-ever devastation by floods in history which not only washed away the basic infrastructure but also damaged agriculture, livestock, fisheries, communication and industrial sectors in Pakistan.

Now the USCC Chief has strongly urged US President Barrack Obama to help flood ravaged Pakistan by getting Congress to pass the stalled legislation that would allow duty-free imports of selected Pakistani products.

Iftikhar said “Thomas Donohue in his letter addressed to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and US Trade Representative Ron Kirk, in the light of flood devastation that recently struck Pakistan, stressed the crucial need to work together to secure Congress approval of the legislation on an urgent basis”.

Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZ) bill proposed by former President George W Bush to aid Pakistan’s recovery from a deadly earthquake in 2005 has been languishing for years in the face of Congressional opposition.

Iftikhar said that during his last meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Pakistan, she was urged to provide immediate direct market access to Pak products on zero duty to help stabilise its bleak economy which suffered irreparable colossal loss in memory in the war on terror and now because of super floods. The ROZ programme aims to create jobs in Pakistan and Afghanistan by providing duty-free access to the US for certain goods made in approved zones within two countries.

Donohue’s letter further said that US businesses in his group “believe the effectiveness of the proposed ROZs programme could be enhanced by expanding legislation’s product coverage and geographic research.”

Extending duty-free treatment to cotton trousers and shirts which account for about two thirds of Pakistan’s apparel exports to the US but only import- would not hurt textile producers but boost US investment in that sector, the letter said. Pakistan’s biggest exports to the US are cotton clothing and household goods. Those items accounted for $2,4b of its total exports of $3.2b to the US last year.

Iftikhar Pak business community including Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and all its affiliated chambers thanked USCC for supporting their demand and hoped that USCC under the sagacious and dynamic leadership of Thomas Donohue, will exercise their influence on Obama’a administration for getting the bill passed which will not only strengthen Pak-US relations but also restore the confidence of Pak people.

In a letter sent on August 4, Transparency International Pakistan has desired that details about the income tax and capital value tax paid in 2009 on assets worth over Rs 225 billion ($3 billion) be also provided. “In case these assets have not been declared to the FBR in 2009-2010 returns of Malik Riaz,” Transparency International Pakistan has requested the FBR to take action according to law. “

Transparency International Pakistan is working for FBR to become a zero tolerance against corruption organisation. The interview given by Malik Riaz to CNN, announcing donation of 75 percent of all his assets for the relief and rehabilitation of flood victims, had prompted Transparency International Pakistan to take up the issue with FBR.

In the interview, he had announced an unprecedented amount of $2 billion to the cause of helping the victims. He had also elaborated the severity of the calamity damaging the agriculture and economy of the country throughout, impacting business and trading activities by up to 60 percent.

Transparency International Pakistan in its letter had also referred to the seminar on ‘Measures to enhance transparency in tax collection and role of Federal Tax Ombudsman’ held in Islamabad on August 5. The consensus achieved in the seminar was:
